Little India
Housed by most of Hindus and some of Buddhists and
Muslims, Singapore Little India is full of Indian senses. Located
on Serangoon Road that is the main commercial precinct in Little
India. Asian charm can be felt in every corner. Serangoon Road stands
the Tekka Centre, the Tekka Mall, the Little India Arcade, Serangoon
Plaza, and the Mustafa Centre (on a side-road).
Indian culture elements are found in shops and temples, whilst
Tamil and Bengali and other exotic Indian colours are also eye-caught.
Looking for Indian goods? Saris and gold bangles, spices, Bollywood's
latest soundtracks are blasted from every alley.
Some of Belestiers attractions:
- Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, 141 Serangoon
Road. Little India's busiest and oldest temple (1881). The temple
is particularly frantic on Tuesdays, Fridays and Sundays. Be sure
to take your shoes off before venturing inside. It is free of admission.
- Farrer Park Fields, located several Hindu temples, mosques,
and other place of worship include Foochow Methodist Church, Kampong
Kapor Methodist Church, Sri Veeramakaliamman Temple, Angullia Mosque,
Sri Vadapathira Kaliamman Temple, Jalan Mosque, and the Central
Sikh Gurdwara.
- The Abdul Gafoor Mosque (1859), a prayer hall, decorated
with Moorish arch-work, displays a tableau featuring the history
of the Islamic religion.
- The Sri Srinivasa Perumal Temple (1855), located on Serangoon
Road, features a high gopuram (tower).
- The Buddhist Sakyamuni Buddha Gaya Temple (1927) Serangoon
Road.
Getting there:
- AMRT stations serving the area are Little India,
Farrer Park, and Boon Keng.
- Bugis station on the East-West line is also within walking distance.
